This outdoor museum preserves the site of the 1754 Battle Of Fort Necessity, an early battle in what historians call the French & Indian War (1754-1763).

The French & Indian War was an extension of the bitter Seven Year’s War (1754-1763) between the Kingdom Of Great Britain and the Kingdom Of France to determine which would be the dominate power in the Western World.

Fort Necessity is located south of Pittsburgh in rural Fayette County. The museum includes a replica of the fort built in the 1970s and later a visitor center and interpretive center were added. Adjacent to the battlefield is the Mount Washington Tavern, an example of one of the many inns that were once located along America’s first federally funded highway.

The museum and park is also the final resting place for General Edward Braddock (1695-1755), the legendary British commander.
