“Khuraki” is a live cultural/ culinary performance designed to challenge Americans’ perceptions about Afghanistan — while supporting a group of Afghan female refugees in their goal to start a collectively owned food business in Pittsburgh.

Afghanistan is a landlocked country at heart of Asia. People have been living in this mountainous land since at least 3000BCE. Its strategic location has made the country a key place for trade, a center for religions (especially Zoroastrian and Islam) and a target for attempted (but usually failed) conquests by many empires.

“Khuraki” celebrates the beauty of Afghanistan through theatrical portraits of five strong women who will forever be Afghan but have recently become Americans as well. Each performance features Afghan food prepared by the women, live Afghan and Western classical music along with moments of immersive cultural experience.

The title translates from the language Dari into English as “meal.” Presented by Real Time Arts, a Pittsburgh-based performance company that creates unique theatrical works celebrating real people and real places.
