The hedonism and hypocrisy of Parisian high society are brought sumptuously to life in this exquisite production of the classic 1853 opera.

A courtesan among the decadent elite, the beautiful Violetta Valéry knows that she will die soon so she lives life to the fullest. This makes her a trophy to be won amongst the balls and frivolities enjoyed by the city’s glittering elite. Complicating this hedonistic existence is a charming young man from a good family named Alredo, whose love for Violetta could make her final days more than just a serious of empty pleasures — something his status-conscious father is determined to prevent.

The opera is based on an 1848 novel written by French author Alexandre Dumas (1824-1895) and was adapted by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). The title translates from Italian into English as “The Fallen Woman.” Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
