A laser is a device that emits optically amplified light (the word was originally an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”). The first device was built in 1960 by American engineer Theodore Maiman (1927-2007). Different kinds of lasers can be used for different applications, from surgery to brilliant entertainment displays.
