For this fascinating exhibition, Oregon-based artist Marie Watt (pictured) presents a new body of work that explores steel and glass — materials deeply tied to the Pittsburgh region’s industrial history — from the perspective of a contemporary Indigenous person, challenging assumed contradictions between visibility and invisibility, strength and vulnerability, and presence and absence.
Marie Watt is a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, and also has German Scot ancestry. Her interdisciplinary work draws from history, biography, Iroquois proto-feminism and Indigenous teachings.
