A tragic tale of conflict between love and duty this remarkable 1831 opera features one of the most grueling and challenging roles in all of opera.

The opera is set during the 100 BCE occupation of Gaul (a.k.a. France) by the Roman Army. As the locals struggle against the invaders, Druid priestess Norma breaks her sacred vows by having a long-term relationship with Roman leader Pollione.

But when Norma finds out Pollione is having an affair with another priestess, it pushes her over the edge with deadly consequences.

“Norma” is one of the most famous works of Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835). Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States.
