Two men confront their mortality in this 2019 Chinese film record of a haunting, magical, autobiographical stage performance featuring life-size mechanical puppets.
The stage show was a multi-year project of influential Chinese artist Ma Liang (a.k.a. Maleonn) after learning that his father Ma Ke — an accomplished Peking Opera director — is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that causes memory loss, behavioral issues and other difficult problems ending with dementia and death. It’s named after German pathologist Alois Alzheimer (1864-1915), who formally described the disease in 1906.
Using evocative imagery and discovering haunting moments, “Our Time Machine” is about the consolation and mystery of art against the ravages of time.
Presented as part of three Rivers Film Festival, the largest and longest running annual film festival in Southwestern Pennsylvania. For more information, call (412) 361-0873.
