In “PerkUp PerKup,” Chicago-based playwright Isaac Gomez (pictured) delivers a pulsating and searing new play about an America divided and on the brink.
The play was inspired by Gomez’s personal experience visiting the tiny rural Wisconsin town of Elkhorn. He spent three days there getting to know the people here and why they carry such fear or skepticism about people of color.
Set at the hottest local coffee shop in Elkhorn — where happiness is sold per the cupful — Lori and Vicki gab about the latest town gossip, Jeff and Eric argue about the latest sports news, and the new cold brew is selling like hot cakes. But when newcomer, Pedro, stops by the shop to borrow WiFi for work, a collision of differences leaves irreparable damage.
