The award-wining pianist and teacher Emmanuel Ax joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing a concerto written by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) as well as a symphony by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Schmidt (1871-1939).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

The 19-year-old Chopin was just like any other young man. As the composer was in music school in Warsaw, he met and fell in love with a fellow student, acting as his muse for the utterly romantic Piano Concerto you’ll hear played by the world-renowned Emanuel Ax. This piece complements Schmidt’s heart-wrenching symphony written in light of his daughter’s early passing.
