Celebrate the most romantic holiday of the year with a program of celestial sweetness centered on a famous work written by English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” is a seven-movement orchestral suite inspired by Holst’s 1913 trip to Spain and a discussion about astronomy. Each movement is named after a planet in the solar system. Debuting in 1917, the innovative nature of Holst’s music quickly became and has remained popular, influential and widely performed.

The program includes the local debut of a new work written by Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach. It is inspired by the ancient Greek tale of Icarus, who attempted to fly with wings made of feathers and wax.
