Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program featuring a famed concerto written by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

The program also includes the local debut of a challenging choral symphony written by Hungarian composer Franz Lizt (1811-1886). That symphony sets to music the 1321 narrative poem Divine Comedy written by Italian philosopher Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). The poem imagines the afterlife, especially that in Hell.
