Randolph Kelly, the principal violist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, takes the spotlight in a program centered on the score of the classic Russian ballet “Petrushka.”
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
“Petrushka” was created between 1910 and 1911 through the collaboration of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), Russian librettist Alexandre Benois (1870-1960) and Russian choreographer Michel Fokine (1880-1942). The ballet tells the story of the loves and jealousies of three puppets — Petrushka, the Ballerina and the Moor — who were brought to life during a fair in 1830 St. Petersburg. A love triangle leads to Petrushka’s death with his ghost seeking justice.
