Under the baton of conductor Elim Chan, pianist Francesco Piemontesi (pictured)and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing the last work written by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Rachmaninoff’s thoughtful and sometimes mournfulĀ “Symphonic Dances” marks the culmination of his multifaceted career. The rhythmic melodies point to his Russian background, while the Dies Irae theme (a type of ancient apocalyptic chant) hints at a potentially darker ending.

The program also features the local debut of a new work by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin.
