Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing two local debuts as well as a beloved piece by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

The program features the Pittsburgh premieres of “Fanfare” written by composer/musician Wynton Marsalis (and co-commissioned by the symphony) and a concerto by British composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Also included is a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1888 suite “Scheherazade,” which was inspired by the Middle East folk tales known collectively as The Arabian Nights.
