South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program that features the 1879 “Great Symphony” written by Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Imagine being neighbors to the brooding German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, seeing his success skyrocket every way you turn. That’s how it was for the young Schubert in Vienna. And as he sat in the concert hall for the premiere of Beethoven’s iconic Ninth Symphony, he left breathless and inspired. In Schubert’s own symphony, you’ll hear the composer’s bold attempt to match Beethoven’s grandeur, even directly quoting the famous “Ode to Joy” motif in his own work.
