Noted violinist David McCarroll (pictured) — who also serves as concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra — appears with the orchestra to perform a popular work written by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Shostakovich’s fifth symphony debuted in 1937 as is notable for incorporating a poem by Russian writer Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) that deals with the matter of rebirth.
