The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs a program focused on the final symphony written by the daring Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Shostakovich’s final symphony is a purely instrumental work that made its debut in 1971. It marked the culmination of a tumultuous life and career in dealing with his nation’s communist dictatorship.

The program also features the PSO’s principal oboist Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida (pictured) in performing a concerto written by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).
