The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs a seminal work by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Shostakovich’s seventh symphony was dedicated to Russia’s historic imperial capital St. Petersburg (then called Leningrad) while it was suffering enemy bombardment during World War II (1939-1945). The 1942 premiere was broadcast by loudspeaker throughout the city and to the German forces in a show of resilience and defiance.

Also: acclaimed French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet (pictured) performs a rhythmically vibrant written by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978).
