Award winning Spanish violinist María Dueñas joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing waltzes and polkas created by the family of Austrian composer Johann Strauss (1804-1849).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Johann Strauss was famous for his waltzes, many of which remain popular today. (Both a genre of music and a type of dance, the German word “waltz” translates as “to roll or revolves”). After dying at age 45 of scarlet fever, his musical legacy was continued by sons Johann Strauss II (1825-1899),  Josef Strauss (1827-1870) and Eduard Strauss (1835-1916).
