The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs the compositions written for the stunning dance moments in the pioneering 1957 musical “West Side Story.”
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
Set in a multiracial, working-class neighborhood, the musical centers on the rivalry between two street gangs which is complicated when a boy from one falls in love with a sister of the other. The core includes memorable songs like “Maria” and “I’m So Pretty.”
