Georgian-French pianist Khatia Buniatishvili joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program centered on the famous “The Rite of Spring” written by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Stravinsky’s angular harmonies and syncopated rhythms in “The Rite of Spring” evoke prehistoric humans worshiping the earth and providing virgin sacrifices, which naturally was met with some disdain by the Paris elite in 1913. Even amidst the jaw-dropping nature of Stravinsky’s work, this innovative classic is not to be missed.
