Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva (pictured) joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program that features music from Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s (1882-1971) 1913 ballet “The Rite of Spring.”
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
The debut of “The Rite of Spring” was scandalous. In addition to the outrageous costumes, unusual choreography and bizarre story of pagan sacrifice, the score’s raw, primal energy and dissonant harmonies shocked audiences. It endures as one of the most influential and groundbreaking works in the history of music.
