The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra transforms Heinz Hall into a storybook with a signature piece by French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

The 1897 composition “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is based on the 1797 poem of the same name written by German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The poem recounts the misadventures of an apprentice sorcerer. The poem and the composition were featured in the pioneering 1940 film “Fantasia.”
