Heinz Hall stage will be filled with blazing sound and fury as Manfred Honeck leads the combined forces of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, and four star operatic soloists in music of fire, passion and the end of time.

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

Founded in 1908, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is a symphonic chorus comprised of volunteer singers and is named in honor of German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). The choir combines the clarity of words with the mystical power of music so that the deepest and most universal of human expressions are magnified through a community of voices.

Few pieces of music offer the drama of opera together with the thrill of brilliant symphonic writing as does Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813-1901) impressive 1874 “Messa da Requiem.”  It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired.  In celebration of his 10th Anniversary season, Honeck chose this monumental masterpiece to highlight his special passion for dramatic choral works.
