Two noted contemporary Spanish artists — conductor Juanjo Mena and guitarist  Pablo Sáinz-Villegas — join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program centered on the work of another Spanish artist.

That artist is composer and musician Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999). Blind since the age of three, he is globally acknowledged for bringing artistic respect to the Spanish guitar.  King Juan Carlos elevated Rodrigo to the Spanish nobility in 1991 by awarding the hereditary title Marques de los Jardines de Aranjuez (the current holder is Rodrigo’s daughter Cecilia),

This program features Joaquin Rodrigo’s signature 1939 composition “Concierto de Aranjuez”. This beautiful piece was inspired by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, a stunning royal palace and gardens created in the 16th century.

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
