French dancer and choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot (pictured) has crafted a fresh approach to a timeless classic.

“Romeo and Juliet” is the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers that dates to antiquity which has been iconized in this play by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). His poetic play is a brilliant mixture of comedy and drama. It chronicles the doomed romance between teens Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, each of whom is a member of a feuding noble house. The couple eventually takes drastic measures after their respective families oppose their relationship.

Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ballet focuses on the youthfulness of the characters and portrays the tragedy from the perspective of the priest, whose good intentions ultimately lead to the demise of the two young, star-crossed lovers.

Presented by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, which has been staging professional ballet in Pittsburgh since 1969.
