Members of Sibyls Shrine offer their works to this installation honoring the ancestral and living matriarchs that shape countless lives.
Formed in 2019, Sibyls Shrine is a network of Black artists who m/other in Pittsburgh — and beyond. It is named after the collection of priestesses (called “sibyls”) who attended to an African water spirit named Mami Wata.
The works form a large-scale, salon-style installation, comprised of portraits, written reflections, memory work, and collective altar-building, that serves as a space for holding our shared grief, joy, and tribute, creating a collective portrait infused with deep reverence for each matriarch.
