The Kelly Strayhorn is a former silent movie palace that has been renovated into a community arts space in the city’s historic East Liberty Neighborhood. The theater is named in honor of two Pittsburgh natives: actor/director Gene Kelly (1912-1996) and jazz composer/musician Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967).
First opened in 1914 as the Regent Theatre, it was a popular spot in the city to enjoy watching some of the silent era’s biggest stars while hearing music performed live on a grand theater.
Today, the Kelly Strayhorn Theater is an intimate, professionally-equipped, 350-seat multiple-use performance venue that retains many of the beautiful elements that put smiles on the faces of filmgoers a century ago. It is professionally equipped and can accommodate a wide range of performing arts events such as concerts, dance, music, theater and other disciplines.
