Pittsburgh’s central business district is the region’s economic, political and cultural core.
Downtown sits at the confluence of the Allegheny River and Monongahela River, who merge to form the 981-mile Ohio River. Its relatively small size has resulted in one of America’s most picturesque city centers with some of the nation’s premier skyscrapers rising to the heavens. The shape of the land and impressive architecture has earned Downtown the nickname “The Golden Triangle.”
Pittsburgh was established in 1758 by decorated British General John Forbes (1707-1759) and named in honor of British statesman William Pitt (1708-1778) who was also known as the Earl Of Chatham. One of Downtown’s important streets is Forbes Avenue.
Most of the business, property owners and institutions are members or associates of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP). The PDP operates a business improvement district and regularly produces events in the Golden Triangle.
