Local artist Heather Hopson’s photo essay and video series “Single Mom Defined” provides a much more accurate definition about single Black motherhood than the one society presents.

Often, when single Black mothers are discussed or Googled, they are crammed into the same stereotypical storyline when in fact they each took different paths to parenthood. The interactive exhibit introduces visitors of all ages to positive images of 50+ mothers in the Pittsburgh region. It aims to change negative search results and combat cultural bias.

Admission is free. Presented as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival, a project of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust featuring multi-disciplinary performing and visual arts attractions in Downtown Pittsburgh. The first festival was staged in 1960. For more information, call (412) 456-6666.
