“Sym” is an evening-length dance work by Pittsburgh-based choreographer Staycee Pearl and sound designer Soy Sos, in collaboration with acclaimed visual artist Barbara Weissberger.
The program employs dynamic movement infused with live experimental sound and a rich visual experience to delve into the writings of esteemed African-American science fiction novelist Octavia Butler.
Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006) won multiple awards for her short stories and novels. She is best known for the acclaimed Patternist series detailing a secret history involving mind control.
The multidisciplinary ensemble explores Butler’s last novel, the vampire-themed Fledgling, to dig deeper into a recurring theme in her work: symbiosis.
