Take an exciting, immersive journey through the rich history, nature and culture of the Hawaiian island chain with this vibrant exhibition.

Hawaii is comprised of eight large and various smaller islands in the Pacific Ocean. With a tropical climate, they are home to numerous animal and plant life. The islands have been populated since at least 124CE. These people were isolated from the rest of the world for centuries until the 1778 arrival of British explorer James Cook (1728-1779). The islands’ communities were combined together in 1795 as the Kingdom of Hawaii by King Kamehameha I (1734-1819). The kingdom was overthrown in 1893 and Hawaii became state of the United States in 1959.

Throughout the 12,000 square-foot, 60-foot high Tropical Forest Conservatory, visitors will enjoy a wide variety of native and endemic species, from the Wao Akua (or sacred forests, a realm of the gods) at the top of the exhibit space to the Wao Kanaka (or realm of the people) in the heart of the Conservatory’s lush expanse.
