Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens — a great steel and glass Victorian greenhouse — has been inviting visitors to explore the beauty and mysteries of plants since 1893. Set amidst one of Pittsburgh’s largest green spaces, Schenley Park, Phipps Conservatory stands as a cultural and architectural centerpiece.

Schenley Park is a large municipal park created on land donated in 1889 by Mary Schenley (1826-1903), a descendant of early Pittsburgh businessman James O’Hara (1752-1819) and a major philanthropist in her own right. The gardens were a gift to Pittsburgh by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps Jr. (1839-1930).

Phipps’ mission is to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse.
