This play (first staged in 1976) explores issues surrounding gender inequality through the lens of the notorious 17th century English witch trials.

Set in a small village, “Vinegar Tom” centers a young woman named Alice and her mother Joan, who are accused of witchcraft after an altercation with their neighbors. The two often challenge the community’s social norms and soon become among the first local women to be charged with witchcraft.

The play was written by groundbreaking British feminist playwright Caryl Churchill during the peak of the 1970’s women’s rights movement in Europe and North America.
