One of the city’s iconic theaters, the Pittsburgh Playhouse is the performing arts center for Point Park University.

Point Park is a liberal arts university founded in 1960 serving nearly 4,000 students at their urban campus in downtown Pittsburgh. The university’s name is derived from The Point, the location in Pittsburgh where the Allegheny River and Monongahela River meet to form the Ohio River.

Until 2018, the playhouse called home a facility in the city’s Oakland neighborhood notable its Colonial-inspired façade that includes handsome columns. That fall, it moved to its current location.

This iteration of the Pittsburgh Playhouse is a 90,000-square-foot structure sitting on approximately 1.6 acres of land along the Forbes Avenue corridor between Wood and Smithfield streets. The new Playhouse is seamlessly interwoven with two existing historic structures –– the 1902 Colonial Trust Company Building (now called University Center) designed by the legendary Frederick J. Osterling (1865-1934) and the 1894 Stock Exchange Building, designed by prominent architect Charles M. Bartberger (1824-1896).

Inside are three academic/theater spaces, scene/prop/costume shops, a sound stage and other facilities. Large windows provide access for the Downtown community to watch artistic productions in the making.
