Begun in 1939 as the Pittsburgh Opera Society, the Pittsburgh Opera is the eighth oldest company in the United States and draws on a rich legacy of music-making.
The company’s headquarters are located inside a renovated factory that was once owned and operated by engineer George Westinghouse Jr. (1846-1914), who invented the railway air brake and later pioneered the electricity industry.
This building provides the Pittsburgh Opera the facilities needed to prepare for performances and hold community programs to engage and enrich the community with more than 20,000 students, families and educators participating in its educational events annually. In 2021, it was renamed in honor of a long-time supporter, technology entrepreneur Francois Bitz.
