This library branch serves the residents of the city’s historic Hill District.

Established in 1890 through a gift by industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), the Carnegie is Pittsburgh’s public library system with 19 branches scattered throughout the city.

The Hill District is a collection of neighborhoods adjacent to Downtown Pittsburgh. For the first half of the 20th Century this area was a vibrant African-American neighborhood often compared favorably to the Harlem section of New York City. In the mid-1950’s a substantial part of the Hill was slated for redevelopment, displacing about 8,000 individuals and leading to the neighborhood’s dramatic economic decline.

The Carnegie Library system has had a Hill District branch since 1899. The current facility opened in 2008. Among the facilities are 26 public computers and two on-site meeting rooms that can accommodate groups of 1 to 25 people.
