The family-owned and operated Wigle Whiskey — which has the only whiskey distillery in the region — operates this Barrelhouse on the city’s historic North Side.

A barrelhouse (also called a “juke joint”) is the slang term for  an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling and drinking,

The company is named after a man who took part in the 1791 Whiskey Rebellion, a protest held in the Pittsburgh area in response to a tax on distilled spirits.

American whiskey was born in Pittsburgh. Throughout the 1700 and 1800s, Pittsburgh was the epicenter of American whiskey production. By 1808, Allegheny County was producing half a barrel of whiskey for every man, woman and child living in America. At this time, Americans drank a spicy, earthy rye Whiskey called Monongahela Rye. At the height of whiskey making in Western Pennsylvania, there were 4,000 documented stills.

While there is no gambling at this “juke joint” concerts, parties and other events are a common happening.
