Alumni Hall is a beautiful, historic building that houses the alumni relations, admissions and financial aid offices of the University Of Pittsburgh.
Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus.
Alumni Hall was originally built in 1914 as a lodge and event center for a local chapter of the fraternal organization called Freemasonry. This remarkable structure’s design echoes that of a classical Greco-Roman temple with its terra cotta façade and ornamentation.
The university acquired the former Masonic Temple in 1993. The renovation shows considerable respect to the building’s history and architecture. Key areas — such as the lobbies and ballroom — were restored while other elements (such as light fixtures) were updated rather than replaced. Today, Alumni Hall is used for various events.
