The Barco Law Building houses the law school of the University Of Pittsburgh.
Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus. In 2003, the building was renamed in honor of lawyer and cable television pioneer George J. Barco (1907-1989) and his daughter, the equally accomplished Yolanda G. Barco (1926-2000).
The Barco Law Building opened in 1976. It’s a contemporary, six-story structure considered to be a fine example of “brutalist architecture” — a style that began in the 1950s that is very linear, blockish and constructed with a predominance of concrete.
Inside are classrooms, a law library, offices and a mock courtroom where students can practice what they have learned.
