The Brew House is a former brewery that has been renovated into a residential and artist facility.  The structure is distinguishable from other buildings on Pittsburgh’s South Side by its large clock, which visible from throughout much of the city.

It began as the headquarters and primary manufacturing center for the Duquesne Brewing Company (1899-1972). The brand took its name from that of an iconic 18th century French fort which was located only a few miles away. Among the company’s many innovations were the use of refrigerated train cars to ship the beer. By 1950, “Duke” (as consumers nicknamed it) one of the top ten breweries in the United States. The company saw serious decline in sales and revenue through the 1960’s. Duquesne was dissolved in 1972 and its facility vacated.

During the 1990s, after decades sitting abandoned, a group of local artists began holding exhibits, events and even residing (i.e. squatting) inside the towering old building. Eventually they formally organized as the nonprofit Brew House Association (BHA). In the 2000’s an agreement was reached with Trek Development Corporation. The result was a renovation that respects the building’s history while providing BHA with a quality gallery space and the community some welcome residential lofts.

Those residential lofts are an industrial, artsy style including high ceilings, large windows and modern finishes. Units include a mix of affordable workforce and market rate apartments for the artist community. Residents enjoy a large community area, 24/7 fitness center and roof top deck.

BHA produces and presents fine art exhibitions in a contemporary gallery and provide studio spaces for professional artists. Emerging artists and curators work with the association through our residency programs to develop their skills and hone their artistic voices.
