This branch of the Carnegie Library serves the residents and businesses of the city’s historic East Liberty neighborhood.
Established in 1890 through a gift by industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), the Carnegie is Pittsburgh’s public library system with 19 branches scattered throughout the city. Since the 1700s, East Liberty has development from grazing area for local cattle to a vibrant, diverse urban center often considered Pittsburgh’s “second downtown.” After decades of decline, the neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance with new businesses, housing and amenities.
This library branch became a good example of this rebirth when it reopened in 2010 after extensive renovations. The eco-friendly building embraces both future and the past with its modern facilities and the rare materials housed in its Heritage Collection.
