One of Pittsburgh’s premier educational institutions, Central Catholic is an all-boys preparatory school affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church is the world’s oldest and largest continuously functioning international institution as well as the largest Christian denomination with over 1 billion followers. The church is rooted in the clusters of people — especially in Ancient Rome — who embraced the teaching of Jesus Christ (4BCE – 30CE). The word “catholic” comes from the Greek word for “universal.” Based in the independent city-state Vatican City, the Catholic Church has influenced Western philosophy, culture, art and science for centuries.

Central Catholic was established in 1927 thanks to the efforts of Bishop Hugh Charles Boyle (1873-1950). Its impressive main building was designed in the National Romanesque Style. A reaction to the industrialization of the late 19th Century, the style drew inspiration from early medieval architecture and even prehistoric precedents. The building has classrooms, the dining hall, the library, the theater, the writing center and other facilities.

Additional structures include gymnasium building, an athletic field and a building dedicated to math and science learning. There is also a residence nearby for faculty members, who are drawn from the teaching congregation called the Brothers of Christian Schools.

Central Catholic’s illustrious alumni include actor Zachary Quinto, professional football player Dan Marino and poet Joseph Bathanti.
