Kelly Street is the primary thoroughfare running about a dozen blocks in the city neighborhood of Homewood. (Homewood is technically divided into three interconnecting neighborhoods: Homewood West, Homewood North and Homewood South. Kelly Street connects all three.)

Homewood began as an independent town in 1823 by attorney and politician William Wilkins (1779-1865). The town initially held mainly estates for the wealthy people such as industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919). After being annexed by the city in 1884, Irish, Italian, German and upper middle class African-American families started moving into Homewood due to the affordable housing. This diverse and largely peaceful community was upended in the 1950’s when a civic development project displaced 8,000 people.  Most of them were low-income black people. In the 1970s, Homewood’s identity and reputation were further degraded by the proliferation of gangs dealing in illegal drugs.

An important resource in the neighborhood’s revitalization is the Homewood Community Development Collaborative. Created in 2015, the collaborative is a network of organizations dedicated to making Homewood a better place to live and conduct business. The coalition’s plans include the steps for inclusive and sustainable redevelopment through 21 goals from improving after school programs to increased transit access, and plans to tackle affordable housing and vacant land.
