Doughboy Square is a triangular memorial to the Americans who fought during World War and were given the nicknamed doughboys.

Also known as the Great War, World War I (1914-1918) was Earth’s first truly global war. More than 70 million military combatants took part on multiple continents, but primarily in Europe. The war caused the collapse of long-standing empires and brought the ideology of Karl Marx (1818-1883) to world attention with the establishment of the Soviet Union (1922-1991). Unresolved issues from World War I played a key role in what became World War II (1939-1945).

The Doughboy statue was sculpted by Allen George Newman (1875-1940) and dedicated on Memorial Day in 1921.

Adjacent to the statute is the former corporate headquarters of the Pennsylvania National Bank. The 1903 structure is a one-story, Beaux-Arts-style building constructed from buff-colored brick with terra cotta ornaments. The bank’s footprint is trapezoidal, with the non-parallel sides defined by the streets on either side.

After the bank departed, the building saw various uses and is now the home to Desmone Architects. It is a fine showcase for the firm’s adaptive reuse capabilities.
