University Center houses the library of Point Park University.
Point Park is a liberal arts university founded in 1960 serving nearly 4,000 students at their urban campus in downtown Pittsburgh. The university’s name is derived from The Point, the location in Pittsburgh where the Allegheny River and Monongahela River meet to form the Ohio River.
What is now University Center was constructed in 1902 as the corporate headquarters of the Colonial Trust Company, a forerunner to today’s PNC Financial Services. It was designed by noted architect Frederick J. Osterling (1865-1934) in the classical style featuring Corinthian columns and rich ornamentation.
Eventually the building was renovated as a branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh which was later acquired by Point Park University. The renovation was conducted with respect to Osterling’s creation. This includes preserving many of the original exterior and interior elements, including the bank’s original safe.
