The Heinz Memorial Chapel is one of the most iconic and architecturally important structures on the University Of Pittsburgh campus.
Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus.
The chapel was a gift to the university by German-American food entrepreneur Henry John Heinz (1844-1919), who founded the world famous H.J. Heinz Company, to honor his late mother. It has had a determined nondenominational approach since opening in 1938, welcoming nearly all people of faith.
Visitors encounter an impressive, neo-Gothic structure designed by noted Philadelphia architect Charles Zeller Klauder (1872-1938), who specialized in university buildings. The walls are made of grey Indiana limestone with the interior ceiling lined with a stone-like ceramic. The Chapel’s wall carvings follow the Gothic tradition of pictorial instruction and express the Chapel’s theme of spiritual values in education.
In addition to being a functional museum and house of worship, Heinz Chapel is a popular site for weddings.
