Many of the city’s biggest events (especially those outdoors) occur across neighborhood boundaries.

Pittsburgh is the second-largest city in Pennsylvania, anchoring a metropolitan region of 2,700,000 people. It began as a British fort in 1758 named in honor of statesman William Pitt (1708-1778), the first Earl of Chatham, and was officially designated a city in 1816.

At one time, Pittsburgh and environs were home to more than 300 steel-related businesses earning the nickname “Steel City.” It’s also known as “The City of Bridges” for the nearly 450 spans of various lengths — second in the world to Venice, Italy.

Some of the world’s biggest corporations have their headquarters or major divisions in Pittsburgh, ranging from industrial behemoth United States Steel  to internet giant Google.
