The Rachel Carson Bridge is one of three self-anchored suspension bridges connected Downtown Pittsburgh with the city’s North Side across the Allegheny River nicknamed “The Three Sisters.”

A self-anchored suspension bridge has the main cables attached to the ends of the deck (rather than to the ground as is common). The Carson and its two sisters were the first such bridges constructed in the United States (in the 1920s and 1930s) and the only trio of nearly identical bridges in the country.

For most of its history, it was known as the Ninth Street Bridge as it connected Ninth Street in Downtown with Anderson Street on the North Side. In 2006, the bridge was formally renamed in honor of Pittsburgh native and early environmentalist Rachel Carson (1907-1964). It’s sometimes used for outdoor events.

STANDARD HOURS:
The bridge is open 24-hours a day.
