South Park is a large, 12,000-acre public park owned and operated by Allegheny County.

The park was completed in 1931 and sits on the site of the Oliver Miller Homestead, an 18th century home where the first shots were fired in the 1791 tax protest known as the Whiskey Rebellion.

Facilities include golf courses, wave pool, sports fields, tennis courts, ice skating rink, outdoor theater, nature center, trails and shelters.

The park is so popular that the town surrounding it changed its name to South Park in 1966. Before that, it was called Snowden after Pittsburgh businessman and politician John M. Snowden (1776-1845).
